Jesse Hernandez: You Beauty

This post will be written (at least at the start) more from a ‘fan’ perspective than from my recently jaundiced ‘I want to be a scout’s’ eyes.  So, let’s celebrate Jesse Hernandez.  As I’ve mentioned previously, we here at YourVanCs have a bit of a soft spot for Jesse after he started and won the Northwest League playoff clincher last year.  As a non-drafted free agent signing, he is probably still a little old for his level, but after faring rather poorly post-promotion from Lansing, he has absolutely dominated hitters in the FSL over his last 2 starts.  In 14.2 IPs, he has limited opponents to only 2 hits, 1 ER and struck out 18 whilst only walking 2.  Ya, striking out 1 and a quarter hitters per inning with a K/BB ratio of 9:1 is pretty good.

While we’re celebrating fan favourites I have been meaning to mention Canadians SS Jorge Flores. When I saw him live, I dismissed his future out of hand due to his size.  But as we’re writing as a fan today, he is undoubtedly fun to watch.  Listed generously at 5’5″ 160 pounds, Jorge has shown impressive pop so far this season with an ISO of .211 (2nd on the team) and a healthy .442 wOBA.  His BABIP is unsustainably high, so things will balance out somewhat, but if you’re that small, yet still getting ABs as a DH, you must be doing something right.

Umm, what’s it like up there?

One C who is both a fan favourite (not only as a Canadian, but in the twitterverse) and a genuine prospect is Marcus Stroman.  Marcus is also ‘on the small side’ for a pitcher, but there is no doubting his stuff.  After two rough(ish) outings as he got acclimatized to pro ball after a long layoff, he has dominated in his last two appearances, improving his FIP to an excellent 1.32  As a Canadians fan this isn’t great news as am afraid he won’t be long for Vancouver.  A promotion to AA New Hampshire is on the cards, just hope Cs fans (ie me)  get an opportunity to see him at least one more time.

And finally, am going to toot my own horn a bit (although, as the piece mentions, it wasn’t really a stretch), Art Charles has been promoted from Bluefield to the C’s.  Art has been getting on base at a fantastic clip for Bluefield as well as showing some power, including 3 triples!!  He’s 6’6″ 220!!  This guy should be fun to watch.  Hopefully he is in uniform tomorrow when I have tickets to the C’s double header against Eugene.

Charles promotion is also inspiration to write another ‘Who’s on their way to the Cs’ piece.  Hopefully this gets done in the next day or two.
